Opole University was founded on the strength of the Act of 10 March, 1994, passed by the Seym of the Republic of Poland.

Opole University is a dynamically developing academic center. In 1994, it began its activity offering courses at four independent departments and now there seven of them: Faculty of Philology; Faculty of History and Pedagogy, Faculty of Theology, Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, Faculty of Natural and Technical Sciences, Faculty of Economics, Faculty of Law and Administration.

One of the distinctive assets of Opole University is its attractive location in a multicultural region. Opole Province, as an area of socio-cultural borderland, fascinates with its diversity and cultural variety and offers most attractive material to conduct research. This co-existence of four cultures: Polish, Silesian, German and Moravian, attracts researchers from different countries and makes studying in Opole University a truly rewarding experience, especially as it comes to such disciplines as linguistics, sociology, psychology, folklore studies, knowledge of cultures, political science, history. Another strong asset is the Dinosaur Silesaurus! It was in Krasiejów near Opole where the sensational discovery of Triassic pre-dinosaurs was made in recent years, thus providing a unique possibility, even on the world scale, of conducting palaeontological research of the remains of dinosaurs preserved here.

At present there are 18,000 students doing 32 majors and 53 specializations. The staff members numbers 1380 - among them 203 professors and habilitated doctors and 327 doctors.

Research, scholarship, and creative activities promote development through the international co-operation and knowledge applications in the natural and applied sciences, social sciences, arts, humanities. Opole University is developing international cooperation within 59 agreements with universities from, among others, the USA, Germany, Great Britain, France, Russia, Ukraine, Sweden, Finland, Italy, Hungary, Australia, Slovakia. As well as research workers, students go to trainings abroad as part of exchange programs (Socrates-Erasmus) and participate in various seminars and conferences.

Opole University confirms:
Diplomas: licentiate and master degree in science and arts
Degrees: doctorate in literature, linguistics, history, pedagogy, chemistry, economy, theology, psychology and habilitated doctorate in history, literature, linguistics, theology
